Why Your DEXA Scan Matters

You can turn your body’s data into an actionable health plan.

A DEXA scan gives you a clear, clinical breakdown of your body’s internal makeup, showing exactly how much fat, muscle, and bone you have, and where it’s distributed. You’ll see your visceral fat level, lean mass by region, bone density scores, and provides a lean mass index for longevity of how much muscle you should be gaining based on your height.

If you’re using GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound, weight loss isn’t just pounds, it’s body composition. A baseline DEXA before you start helps you differentiate fat loss from muscle loss and monitor bone density over time. Follow-up scans let you and your care team adjust protein intake, resistance training, and calorie targets to preserve lean mass and metabolic health as the scale goes down.

These insights help you track progress, identify risks, and make informed decisions about your health going forward.

See the Markers That Matter Most for Your Health

A DEXA scan gives you clinically accurate data on the three pillars of long-term health: lean muscle, bone strength, and visceral fat. These are the metrics most closely tied to energy, mobility, and age-related disease risk. With your scan results, you’ll know exactly where you stand and what steps to take next.

Centrally located in Fairfield County, our Westport office makes it easy for clients from Greenwich, Stamford, and nearby towns to get the data they need to take control of their health. We also serve clients in Westchester County.

What Happens During a DEXA Scan

Here’s what to expect from your DEXA Scan session at Longevity Westport.

Your DEXA scan takes place in a calm, professional setting with our expert staff guiding you through every step. The entire process is quick, comfortable, and non-invasive, lasting about 7 to 10 minutes from start to finish.

You’ll remain fully clothed (minus any metal objects like belts or jewelry) and lie flat on a padded table while the scanning arm passes slowly over your body. The machine uses a very low-dose X-ray, similar to the radiation exposure of a short airplane flight, to capture precise measurements of bone density, muscle mass, body fat, and visceral fat.

"You can usually keep your CGM(continuous glucose monitor) on during your DEXA scan.  The scan uses very low radiation and is not known to harm the device, though occasional temporary signal interruption is possible."

Important DEXA Scan Information

To ensure safety and scan accuracy, our DEXA scanner has a maximum weight limit of 350 lbs.

Clients at the higher end of the scanner range may still complete a body composition scan; however, visceral fat measurements may occasionally be limited or unavailable based on image quality and scanner parameters. In some cases, the scan may also generate a mirrored body image estimate, where arm measurements, body fat, and lean mass are represented symmetrically to provide the most accurate assessment possible within scanner capabilities.
